After guests are welcomed into your home, the first thing they see is the entryway. It sets the tone for the rest of your home’s design and style. That means ensuring your foyer is a showstopper is a must. Here, we’re sharing some of our favourite tips for creating an entryway that is consistent with your home and sure to wow anyone who comes through the door.

1. Make it Functional

The most important element of your entryway is its functionality. This is a high-traffic space that demands organization and ease of use. The first way to optimize its function is to create a checkpoint. This typically looks like a console table or credenza that can hold your keys, wallet, and other items you put down when you get in.

You may opt for a table that has storage capabilities like cupboard doors, or it may have space below for some natural texture baskets to store shoes and outdoor gear. Having somewhere to store hats and mittens in the winter is crucial.

For your foyer to be functional, it also needs to have ample space for walking through and for putting on shoes. While it may be tempting to add extra furniture here, avoid compromising the square footage.

2. Keep it Simple

Unless your home has a maximalist interior design, less is more. Focus on simplicity and function along with a handful of items that allude to your design personality.

For example, you might want a stylish lamp, tabletop statue, a houseplant, a charging station, and family photo frames on the entryway table, but might look too busy. Instead, pick a few items to sit on the console table that add both function and personality.

We love seeing items that serve multiple purposes. You could find a stunning mirror to sit atop the table which acts as a décor element while allowing you to check your outfit before you leave.

3. Emphasize a Focal Point

Entryways are excellent spaces to include a single focal point. That could be an accent wall painted in a colour that compliments the rest of your home’s colour scheme. Or, it could be a stand-out chandelier hanging above the foyer.

Focal points add interest and personality to an otherwise functional and simplistic space. This could be the perfect opportunity to display a piece of art on the wall that is special to your family or that ties in with the rest of the home.

Perhaps you have a home accessory you got on a family trip or a piece of art made by your child. You could even have professional portraits taken of your family. These all make excellent focal points to personalize your entryway.
