The backyard is an extension of the home. It’s where you enjoy summer barbeques, morning coffees, and where you watch the kids or grandkids play. We make the most of our backyards, which is why they deserve the same care and attention as the inside of your home. Here, we’re sharing 5 timeless backyard summer trends to make your outdoor space even more spectacular.

1. Extending the Use of Your Backyard

Summers are short-lived here in Southern Ontario, but that doesn’t mean your backyard has to be. There are lots of trendy items that extend the use of your yard past August.

Consider investing in a pair of outdoor space heaters and some thick wool blankets. You can still have friends and family over for evening get-togethers in the fall as long as you keep everyone warm.

You can also extend the use of your backyard from daytime to night by investing in durable and stylish outdoor lighting. String Edison lights are timeless and add a cozy ambiance to your backyard soirees.

2. Growing Your Own Food

For many homeowners, gardening is as much a hobby as a source of sustainable food. Sustainability is a timeless and growing trend in interior design, from the types of materials you use to the efficiency of your appliances. If you’re interested in minimizing your impact on the environment, consider growing your own food.

Not only does picking fresh tomatoes from your backyard feel satisfying, but vegetable plants add more lush foliage and greenery to your backyard.

3. Bringing Your Interior Design to the Exterior

Since we spend so much of our summer in our backyards, it’s important to tie the interior design in with the exterior. That means taking elements from your interior design, like colours, textures, or themes, and adding them to your backyard design.

Some ways you can do this are by painting the backyard shed the colour of your interior accent wall, or by matching your patio furniture fabric to your throw pillows in your living room.

4. Adding a Fiery Focal Point

You don’t need to drive to the cottage for a bonfire when you have a stunning firepit in your own backyard. Firepits are attractive design elements in backyards, and they’re only growing in popularity.

Ensure you choose a pit that follows your local bylaws and that you have the proper safety measures in place. Then, secure some marshmallow sticks and chopped wood and you’re good to go!

5. Rattan Everything

Rattan is a durable, sustainable, beachy material that looks good in every room of the house, not in the least in the backyard. When used sparingly and strategically, rattan is a classic design element that will outlast seasonal trends.

Consider investing in rattan side tables for your outdoor lounge chairs, or even a woven rattan hanging chair.
